The sea!
Today we rode 560 km between Gobabis and Swakopmund in Namibia.
Lukas is getting soft and there is suddenly time for lunch
almost every day. This new philosophy is popular among the
rest of the team. The weight reductions seems to have stopped.
We have ridden in a rainy and very flat landscape the last
few days, at a constant altitude of 1500 metres, flat like
a stadium. No mountains on the horizon and roads that are
much too straight – half as straight would have been
enough.

When we spotted the first mountain it was like crossing the Atlantic
and catching the first glimpse of America.
For some reason we all longed for the sea. I think Stefan was worst
hit and he took this pose to see if he could see the Atlantic.
Finally we got there and it is something special to see the waves
hit the coast efter their long trip from South America, growing big
before they land.
I sit and write this in my hotel room and have the window open, with
the Atlantic about 25 metres away. The sound from the waves gives
me peace and I love to hear the sand sort itself out. The bigger waves
come about 12 seconds from each other and between these are 3.4 smaller
waves. I am thinking of a song lyric in Swedish, Open Landscapes,
and a line which goes like: “Near the sea I want to live”.
I do understand people who want to build their houses near the sea.
It is like living in the wilderness, the weather gets to be important
and you are closer to nature than if you live in a city, surrounded
by high buildings and you never know if it’s hot or cold, if
the wind blows or if it rains or if the sun is shining.
