Time
of change
This morning in the hotel we were surprised to see lots of Europeans
at breakfast. Lukas asked himself what they were doing there.
I suggested they were charter tourists, but the wasn’t
satisifed: ”What are they doing all day?” Ian suggested
they were looking at things, churches and such. Lukas wouldn’t
have it: “If you’ve seen one church, you’ve
seen them all.”
After a short pause, Ian suggested we should call a press conference
and have Lukas inform all stray tourists about how attractions
work. |

I continued thinking about this and saw a new venture. Imagine the
presentation in the media: ”Charter express with Lukas –
see EVERYTHING in 24 hours!” The tourists would have to be fit,
though, have to be screened before departure to find an A-team that
can keep up with Lukas.
I have also realised I am very rich. I have four children and a large
untapped resource. The thousands of cattle we pass are always herded
by children. Why do my wife Eva and I waste time driving the children
to football and hockey, when we could just as easily put them to work?
When I’m back home in March, there will be new marching orders.
We stopped and bought some fruit I have never tried before from some
school children. It reminded of peach, but the taste was different.
Lukas immediately asked the children if they went to school and what
they did. After a critical study of their text books that would have
impressed even my wife (who is a headmaster), he was satisfied. Mikko
decided to spend a bunch of Toyota biros, which caused absolute chaos.
According to Toyota dealer Oikari this is because of the printed text
on the pens.
Today we have covered 565 kilometres, started at dawn and finished
at dusk, arriving at our destination Addis Abeba.
The city looked inviting as we approached from the mountains in the
last daylight and the lights put a sheen on the valley. There is a
difference between countryside and city life in Ethiopia.
