A day off
I must share the sunrise across Nasser lake with you, created by president
Nasser in the late `50s, in an effort to prevent floods in the heavily
populated parts in northern Egypt. Strange that the water runs north
to the Mediterranean, I’m used to all rivers flowing east.
We have travelled first-class, meaning we have our own cabin. Mikko
seems to have slept well in his own bed and sleeping bag. There is
not much to do on the boat, than to sleep during the dark half. Daytime
it’s nice to sit on deck and enjoy the scenery around the lake.
Now we have arrived in Sudan. Lukas was to organise the ship and it
didn’t turn out as we expected, travelling with the vehicles
on the same ship. Now we are split on two ships, with a barge-like
ship for the vehicles. After we had loaded the captain informed us
that he arrives a day later. Now we are chatting with some Englishmen
who sent their vehicles one day before they left themselves. They
expect their vehicles to arrive after yet another day. If this is
true, we will have two days here in Wadi Halfa. Ian is calm as always
and reads the book ” A little history of the world”, as
Lukas rushes around talking to himself about how he will die of boredom
if the bikes don’t turn up immediately. And these brothers should
have the same genes!
Mikko watches an offroad race from last autumn on his mobile. The
way he holds his head indicates he should get other glasses, for distances
and macro lens for close fighting with phones and manuals.
When we finally passed customs, which needs its procedure streamlined
by the way, we found a barber. Lukas started harassing Ian to have
a haircut and we were all, I think, a bit shocked when the barber
simply cut straight across his head and left a grove about 2 millimetres.
After the usual jokes and, I think, a rather intimidated Ian, the
whole group except Stefan had their hair cut. Stefan is already shaved.
The team picture with the barber is included, price one dollar per
head.
It seems as if everybody in Sudanes changes money with tourists. The
inflation seems to be extensive and everybody wants dollars.
