Guest columnist

Today is Sunday and the day of rest is sacrosanct. To PG at least, so I get to write today’s column, Stefan W.

We did not have a day of rest. We have a couple of days to service the cars, reloading and organise everything for the rest of the trip and see that everything works. Today I have checked that the shower works and it does! The car I drive is specially adapted with tanks for water, diesel and petrol. We will need this further south, where service stations are few and far between.

General service was also on the agenda. PG has changed oil on the HP2 and I have filled up with cleanser for the windshield. A trip into downtown Cairo for spares (oil and relay) took a big part of the morning for PG and myself. Finding your way in Cairo is not easy, but Unsama was there to drive us. Traffic is like nothing in Sweden. You use the horn more than the indicators and then you have to look out constantly. An undamaged car is rare. Finding the right parts was easy, though. The shops are very specialized. Some have only car parts and the next one has only tools. Next door is the butcher’s.

The meat is fresh and the guarantee is that the goats and the cows are munching grass directly behind the shop as the cars roll by. We are lucky and find what we were looking for, but no meat, because PG, cook for the trip, felt that freeze dried food is enough.

Tomorrow we will probably have finished organising the loading and can do some physical exercise. There is a ping-pong table in the house and there is a pool in the garden we still haven’t tried, so there are alternatives. If time allows, a visit to the museum may be in the books as well. We’ll see, Insh Allah, as they say here.
