Driving instruction!

Today we rode and drove between the Dead Sea and Aqaba, a distance of only 260kms. Temperatures have ranged between 17 and 23 degrees and are getting nearer to what I’m used to in Africa, perfect for riding.

The cliffs along the Dead Sea are something special and the nature along the road is changing constantly and really worth seeing.

The salt on the beaches look inviting, but there is no life in the water, at least no visible life..

After half the day’s distance it was time for some driving instruction. I directed the cars away from the roads to take some pictures of what driving conditions will be like later in the six weeks of crossing Africa. Rule number one for the cars is: ”Never drive anything so it breaks”. We’ll see. I only know that if anything breaks, we will have problems finding parts and getting repairs done. But I do know that anything can happen, even if we are careful. The odds that the cars will stand up to it are good, however, the cars are sturdy and the drivers are capable from what I have seen. It remains to be seen how much endurance they have. It will be long days.

As you may have seen, we are making a detour around Israel, something to make the next border passages in the Arabic countries easier. I have never had a stamp from Israel in my passport, so I don’t have firsthand experience of this.

Stage one is soon over. Tomorrow when we board the ferry to Egyptian Nevi´ot we only have one more day of driving. In Cairo we then have a week to make service and getting prepared for the real adventure - AFRICA.
