Burned intros

Temperatures today between +2 and +14. We have travelled from Gaziantep in Turkey to Damascus in Syria, a distance of 470 km.

I was a bit excited before the border crossing Turkey-Syria, as I had heard too many stories, maybe untrue, about how the customs people don’t speak English and all documents have to be written in Arabice, from right to left. None of it was true and we got through in two hours. The only problem is I have to convince the Swedish tax authorities that it isn’t always possible to get a receipt. I will write my own, over 355 US dollars, including diesel road-tax, insurance and the register fee for the carnet, which I find cheap for five vehicles, three of them rolling on their wheels.

Syrian motorways were a new experience, practically all vehicles are trucks, but their philosophy for loading cargo leaves a lot to be desired. Wonder what European police would say about this load.

Today Mikko got home-sick. This is what I found when I downloaded the pictures he took today.

He is 5,150 km from his home in Gävle and, more important, from his wife Anita. Note also the altitude. I am surprised at how high up we are for long periods of time. Highest today was 1,460 metres between A´Zaz and Damascus. We are now in the city centre of Damascus in a hotel and the city is much bigger than I expected. Traffic is like in Cairo, a constant traffic plug. At least compared to what I am used to in Fjällbonäs.

Montezuma’s revenge in a light form has hit Mikko. I was wondering if I should keep book over such cases during the whole trip. Last summer I was interviewed by a local radio station in Arvidsjaur, from a mobile studio. In the bus was the producer and above him was a little piece of paper with the name of all commentators and different numbers of marks at each name. The list was titled “Burned intros”. Apparently it’s a sin to keep talking when the intro for the next music has begun. I wonder what I will use as a title for my records over the number of cases of Montezuma’s revenge?
