Update 2.0

2 degrees below and 520kms ridden.

Today in Eksjö what shouldn’t happen, happened, but from experience I know that un-tried developments will fail. The attachment for my rear fuel container broke, the rear bit just disappeared.

Heartbroken I left the Shell station in Eksjö and immediately had the next disaster. When I reached 45kph the driveshaft gave off serious noise, a mechanical clanking noise that seemed to vary with the speed. How on Earth can 3,000 lady-ridden kilometres with a quality product from BMW cause this? If it’s not the cat, it’s the mother-in-law…

Telephone contact with Peter Andersson at BMW only led to his answering machine. Now we had to find a solution. After some hard thinking I decided to proceed slowly to Vetlanda and the closest dealer for help. After 2kms the impossible happened and the driveshaft repaired itself.

I have never experienced this before but my pal Per Andersson did, 20 years ago. He owned an extremely old and battered Volkswagen pick-up. It broke down in February and Per parked it behind his garage, where it was left in shame for over a month. Then he started it up again and it had fixed itself. Per maintains to this day that the car had repaired itself. I was always sceptical to this story, but now, 20 years later, I have the same experience. After some hours more I understood what had happened. Thy tyre was stressed and lost a few spikes, one of which did not let go completely, but hung sideways and hit the swinging arm every time it passed. When I continued to ride, this spike let go completely from the tyre and the noise stopped..

The company Famero with Inge and Hasse was trusted to upgrade the container holder, fabricated by Håkan Hammarstedt. In computer terms the upgrade went to 2.0. I hope sincerely that no further update – to 3.0 – will be necessary. That would probably be in Sudan or Ethiopia und I doubt there are computer updates to 3.0 available there.
