Today we drove from Aly-Bayramly in Azerbaijan to Rasht in
Iran. Azerbaijan is a mirror of the old Soviet Union. Of what I have
seen of former eastern countries, I feel that Azerbaijan takes the
price, in a negative sense, in not having developed at all. On the
roads you see almost only Russian cars and large numbers of police
and military. All suggestions and references from road traffic regulations
in the the Western world you can simply forget.
Of course Cam and Lukas managed to find an oil feld, state-owned and
mostly outdated, but according to Cam with great potential. The country
seems to have large quantities of oil and most of the land is exclusively
state-owned
The shepherd on horseback and a pipeline, two widely different concepts
meet in harmony.
Getting into Iran was exciting and the cooperation between the border
controls was non-existent. On the Azerbaijan side, lunch was between
13:00 and 14:30 and the Iranians took lunch between 14:00 and 16:00.
The border is hidden on the coast of the Caspian Sea and very few
people cross here. We only saw a couple of trucks. Then when we wanted
to set our watches to local time, things turned mysterious. The picture
got more clear after we had spoken to a bout a dozen people. We were
to set the clocks back 1 hour and 30 minutes, even though we have
travelled in an easternly direction.
